RED LIGHT THERAPY TREATMENT AT A GLANCE
WHAT IT DOES: During a red light therapy treatment, the skin is exposed to a lamp, device or laser-like red light. The light is absorbed by mitochondrial chromophores in the skin, enhancing bloodflow, releasing adenosine triphosphate (ATP), (the cell’s primary form of energy), and activating diverse signaling pathways. Although the mechanism of cellular photobiostimulation is not fully understood, red light therapy has a wide range of effects at the molecular, cellular, and tissue levels. As a result of this photobiomodulation energy, stem cells are activated, aiding tissue repair and healing by increasing synthesization of proteins such as collagen and elastin.3 Red light therapy does not contain harmful UV rays and will not burn or damage the skin.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: The red light spectrum is broad and not all wavelengths deliver the same therapeutic benefit. Patients interested in red light therapy devices for home use to complement professional red light therapy treatments should consider equipment in the range of 630-670 nanometers (nm) for skin rejuvenation and healing and a range of 700-950 nm for low level laser therapy (LLT) for healing and relief of body pain and inflammation.
In addition to wavelength, devices will vary based on the energy output. Output of a red light therapy device is known as irradiance (the flux of radiant energy per unit area) and is measured in terms of mw/cm2. Red light therapy devices vary greatly based on the output and application parameters.4 Professional photobiomodulation equipment includes specific training or pre-programmed settings to ensure the proper amount of light energy is absorbed by the tissues, but the time that takes may vary significantly.
