MEDIUM CHEMICAL PEEL AT A GLANCE
WHAT IT DOES: A medium chemical peel penetrates beyond the epidermis reaching the upper layer of the dermis, the papillary dermis, achieving a final depth in the skin of .45-.60mm. The destruction of these upper layers of the skin causes an increase in collagen, elastin and glycosaminoglycan production as new tissue is generated to replace it. In addition, a medium chemical peel reaches levels in the skin that contain clusters of pigment and is able to break up these deposits of abnormal pigment allowing them to be naturally removed from the skin.3
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: Prepping the skin to receive a medium chemical peel can have a significant impact on the outcome and healing times after a medium chemical peel. Medium chemical peel before and after care recommendations may vary depending upon the patient’s skin type and the medium chemical peel to be used. However, a common prep protocol for a medium depth chemical peel includes a skincare regimen containing retinoids, alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), pigment inhibitors such as hydroquinone or kojic acid, and consistent sun protection.4 This pre medium chemical peel protocol is stopped 3-5 days prior to receiving the medium chemical peel to ensure the skin is not weakened before the medium depth chemical peel.
