MICRODERMABRASION TREATMENT AT A GLANCE

WHAT IT DOES: A true professional microdermabrasion treatment generally will remove the top layers of dead skin cells, essentially removing the protective barrier of the skin. Microdermabrasion devices may be either a crystal or diamond-head system. The first microdermabrasion machine on the market, the crystal system, propels small crystals of aluminum oxide, sodium chloride, or magnesium oxide on the skin. The intensity of the flow of crystals can be adjusted to provide more exfoliating action, while continuous suction removes the crystals along with the loosened dead skin and debris. The diamond-head system also uses continuous suction, but dislodges dead skin cells and cellular debris via a wand tip encrusted with diamond “shards”. The technician scrapes the wand tip on the surface of the skin, “sanding” away the top layers. The action of a microdermabrasion facial may be limited to the epidermis, but the abrasion and suction increases blood flow in the skin, nourishing the epidermis by diffusion from the capillaries in the upper layers of the dermis. Microdermabrasion also promotes increased collagen fiber density at the dermal-epidermal junction. The result is a fresh layer of “young” glowing skin.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: Microdermabrasion can leave the skin especially susceptible to water loss, or epidermal water loss. To combat this outcome and prep the skin for optimal recovery, it’s important to be well hydrated for 24 hours prior to the microdermabrasion treatment and for 48 hours after microdermabrasion. Although microdermabrasion does not cut or break the skin, it is a form of wounding and hydration is an important aid to the body as it works through the repair process.
