WHAT IT DOES: When used as a collagenase injection for cellulite dimples on the buttocks, collagenase clostridium histolyticum damages the peptide bonds in collagen, breaking it down while helping to make new collagen. The fibrous bands thought to create the dimpling effect of cellulite are rich in collagen type I and III and are particularly susceptible to degradation by collagenase clostridium histolyticum. The collagenase clostridium histolyticum action loosens the tension or destroys the fibrous band releasing the dimple to improve the appearance of cellulite.2

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: A standard protocol includes three treatments administered once every three weeks. After this initial course of collagenase clostridium histolyticum injections, further collagenase injections may be recommended.3 Patients may see results after a collagenase injection in as little as three weeks. The permanency of a collagenase clostridium histolyticum treatment is not yet well known, but early indicators suggest that it may provide a permanent correction to the appearance of cellulite.
