AQUAGOLD® TREATMENT AT A GLANCE

WHAT IT DOES: The AQUAGOLD® Fine Touch™ treatment uses a stamp microneedling device with 20 24K-plated needles each containing an internal microchannel that injects a serum into deep layers of the skin. The patented microchannel injection technology activates via spring-loaded needles when the head of the device is pressed against the skin, creating a possible 2,400 microinjections in one minute (per the makers’ claims). Unlike other forms of microneedling which creates perforations in the skin along with a topical solution to be absorbed, an AQUAGOLD® facial directly deposits the solution into the skin.
For such a quick procedure, taking just around 10 minutes to perform the actual AQUAGOLD® microneedling, there is also broad customization possible in the contents of the serum. A popular, medical-grade AQUAGOLD® facial includes a patient’s own PRP (platelet-rich plasma), a neuromodulator such as XEOMIN®, and either a low to mid viscosity hyaluronic acid (HA) filler or a multi-molecular weight HA serum depending on a patient’s needs1. Lidocaine is often included in the biologic mixture to increase patient comfort. This combo accomplishes collagen induction (via AQUAGOLD® microneedling), stem cell activation (via PRP), resurfacing and plumping of texture (with HA filler or serum) and diminished pore appearance (by “freezing” the arrector pili muscles with a neuromodulator). For patients wanting to avoid the extra cost of PRP harvesting and clinical-grade neuromodulators, an AQUAGOLD® facial may be performed using the serum suite created by the brand or a mixture created by the administering physician.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: As with many popular and novel procedures, counterfeit AQUAGOLD® devices are on the market. One survey found that 37% of surgeons have encountered counterfeit medical devices with 20% having patients with adverse effects from them. AQUAGOLD® is only available for purchase by licensed injectors, and while counterfeit AQUAGOLD® devices are available online, it is not a procedure that is safe to perform without the knowledge and expertise of a medical professional.

Ultrasonic Spatula

An ultrasonic skin scrubber is a water-based exfoliation method. It works by delivering ultrasonic sound waves at a frequency generally between 28,000 and 30,000 vibrations per second to loosen and draw out excess dead skin cells and debris, collecting the material on the metal head of the face spatula as it glides over the skin. ABLATIVE LASER

An ablative laser functions via an intense heat to vaporize or “ablate” skin cells. During an ablative laser resurfacing, an intense beam of light energy is directed at the specific target on the skin. The laser beam destroys the epidermis or outer layer of the skin while heating the underlying tissue to a temperature capable of denaturing existing collagen and stimulating new collagen production which will develop over time (commonly up to 6 months post-procedure). ERBIUM LASER

Erbium laser is an example of a solid-state laser. As the light from an erbium laser hits the skin it is absorbed by water inside the skin cells resulting in their destruction. The heat generated in the area surrounding the target tissue results in shrinkage, or “tightening” of existing collagen strands while also stimulating the formation of new collagen. Erbium laser is more active on the upper layers of the skin and cannot penetrate to the depths of a gas state laser, such as CO2 lasers.

INTENSE PULSED LIGHT

An IPL treatment delivers a broad spectrum of light, which may be adjusted to particular wavelengths, into the layers of the skin. PHOTODYNAMIC THERAPY

All forms of photodynamic therapy result in chemical sensitivity to light for the first 48-72 hours. All forms of natural light should be avoided and the use of a minimum 30 SPF sunscreen is recommended even if staying indoors. In general, a burning or stinging at the site of the PDT treatment is common for 24-48 hours with redness and/or swelling lasting up to a week. Scaling and peeling of the skin is common for 4-6 weeks as the damaged skin is replaced by new tissue.
